The Mina Citronella is a citrus yellow flower with long stems that is a rare variety of Mina Lobata and is used for keeping mosquitos away! This variety starts out with dark yellow buds that transforms to a citrus yellow, and ending with creamy white tips. This variety's blossoms are held upright on long stems making a nice contrast against its dark green foliage. This easy to grow spectacular vine grows to 15 feet in full sun. Mina's climbing vine is super in baskets and will bloom in 10 weeks from seed.

Before Planting

A successful Citronella planting begins with a warm location with bright, indirect light and protection from cold drafts and harsh midday sun. Use a clean, well-drained potting mix suited to citronella and a container with unobstructed drainage holes. Sanitize containers, inspect planting material for pests or rot, and pre-moisten the mix before planting.

Planting

Start citronella indoors in a clean, free-draining medium, generally maintaining 70–80°F unless the species prefers cooler conditions. Keep the medium evenly moist but never saturated, and expect slow or irregular germination from woody or tropical seed. Provide bright filtered light after emergence. Pot seedlings individually once sturdy, disturbing the roots as little as possible.

Watering

Citronella prefers moderate, even moisture during active growth. Let the surface dry slightly between waterings, then irrigate thoroughly and empty any drainage saucer to prevent root rot.

Fertilizer

Citronella benefits from diluted complete fertilizer during active growth. Apply at label intervals to moist soil, reduce feeding in low light, and avoid soluble-salt accumulation.

Harvesting

There is no routine harvest for citronella. Collect mature seed, offsets, or propagation cuttings only when available, and remove material with sanitized tools while preserving the plant’s shape and growing point.

Tips

Increase humidity around citronella with grouped plants or a humidifier rather than constantly wet soil. Inspect leaf undersides regularly and isolate new plants before adding them to a collection.

Pests & Diseases

Citronella plants can develop rust, leaf blight, Botrytis, and root rot. Rust leaves orange-brown pustules, while overwatering produces dark roots and general yellowing. Keep container crowns above soggy mix, remove infected blades, and separate overwintered plants so diseases do not spread in close indoor quarters.

Common citronella pests include mealybugs, scale, spider mites, thrips, and fungus gnats. Check leaf undersides and stems, quarantine new plants, and remove heavily infested growth.
