Delaware Natives

Indian Steel is a clump-forming perennial grass with an upright, open habit typically growing upwards of 5' tall. Under the right circumstances it can be 7-8' tall. Features slender (1/2" wide), blue-green leaf blades (8-12" long) which turn yellow in fall and retain some gold color throughout the winter.

Gloriosa daisies, also known as Rudbeckia hirta 'Gloriosa,' are a vibrant and dynamic variety of the traditional Black-eyed Susan, renowned for their striking appearance and robust growth. Originating from North America, these daisies have been cultivated since the 18th century and have become a staple in gardens for their cheerful and resilient nature. Gloriosa daisies are characterized by their large, radiant blooms with a distinctive color gradient, featuring fiery, orange to red petals with a dark, central cone.

Carex comosa is a large tufted wetland sedge. The narrow leaves are lime green and shiny. In late spring triangular culms rise above the foliage to 5’ bearing large chartreuse bottlebrush shaped spikes. Attractive warm brown seed spikes follow. This bold sedge flourishes in sun or part sun in damp or wet sites. Plants prosper in difficult wet mucky soils or even in shallow water.

Also know as Bush Bluestem, this perennial grass is a tufting, sturdy, warm-season grass that will grow up to 4'. The foliage has a reddish tint. Interesting, beard-like flowers appear in fall. This plant prefers moist to damp sites and is not drought tolerant.

The Divaricata Phlox is a beautiful blue to lavender colored variety that gives off a wonderful aroma, making it a home garden favorite! This fragrant variety is a showstopper in any garden, container or vase!

If you want to attract butterflies to your garden, this is the plant variety for you! The Sweet Joe Pye Weed can reach up to 7 feet high and does great in shady locations. This beautiful flower blooms pale pink to pale purple flowers from July to September.

Spotted Joe Pye Weed, is a distinctive perennial native to North America's moist meadows and woodlands. Named after Joe Pye, a Native American herbalist, this plant has a rich history in traditional medicine. It is recognized for its tall, elegant growth, typically reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet, and its unique spotted stems that give it its common name.

Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is a native North American herb with a rich history and distinctive characteristics. Historically used by Indigenous peoples for its medicinal properties, Boneset earned its name from its traditional use in treating fevers and musculoskeletal ailments. Originating from the eastern United States, this perennial plant is recognized for its unique features and growing habits. Boneset typically grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet and has a bushy, upright growth habit.

The False Sunflower is a very beautiful, early blooming flower that will brighten up any landscape and can be enjoyed from June until August. This very hardy plant that can survive in most climates and soil types. The False Sunflower is an early variety that is aggressive and therefore may not be suitable for small landscape plantings. This variety is a short-lived perennial.

Lance Leaf Coreopsis seeds come from a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial known for its bright, daisy-like yellow flowers with a reddish center. This plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for adding color to gardens, especially in xeriscaping or low-maintenance landscapes. Growing up to 2–3 feet tall, Lance Leaf Coreopsis attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, while its long bloom period—typically from early summer to fall—provides continuous interest in the garden. The seeds are easy to sow and germinate quickly, making it a great option for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

The Whorled Asclepias is a beautiful brilliant white flower that will grow anywhere and bees, butterflies and hummingbirds love it! This Butterfly Weed variety is native to the Midwest but can grow almost anywhere is the USA and provides nectar to many pollinators. This easy to grow, attractive perennial blooms mid to late summer and will spread easily without thinning.

The Perennial Lupine produces beautiful spikes of purple colored flowers that will bloom from late spring throughout summer! This Lupine variety grows to be about 18-36” tall with vibrant spikes. This variety can be planted throughout a flower meadow or in the garden bed. The Perennial is easy to establish and grow, and Lupines are deer resistant and blooms year after year.

Asclepias incarnata ‘Ice Ballet’, often called White Swamp Milkweed, is a selected form of the native Swamp Milkweed long found along wetlands, marsh edges, and moist prairies across North America, where it has served for generations as an essential host plant for monarch caterpillars. This cultivar stands out for its showy clusters of pure white, vanilla-scented flowers that bloom in midsummer, contrasting beautifully with its upright stems and narrow, deep-green leaves.

A tropical appearance bloom that can thrive in cooler locations (zone 5 and above). Produces beautifully stunning white and crimson flowers. Hibiscus moscheutos plants prefer wet areas in the wild, but can also be grown in a well-watered garden.

The Sneezeweed Helenium produces a numerous amount of beautiful, large, daisy-like yellow flowers that bloom in the late summer and early autumn! Despite its common name, this variety presents no problems for most allergy sufferers.

The Eastern Pollinator Blend is a wildflower mixture for pollinator conservation in the eastern United States and southeast Canada. The western planting boundary would be a line straight south from the eastern borders of North and South Dakota. This mix contains a balanced blend of native annuals and perennials that provide nectar and pollen throughout the growing season. The Indiangrass is a warm-season bunchgrass that is native to central and eastern North America and provides cover and food for wildlife. This grass can reach up to seven feet tall and is a common species of the Tallgrass Prairie. The beautiful, plume-like seed heads are very ornamental making them excellent for prairie and conservation mixtures.

The Delaware Blend combines annual and perennial wildflowers selected for ornamental planting in the northeastern United States. Its current component profile features Siberian Wallflower, Cornflower, Purple Coneflower, and Perennial Lupine. Delaware’s coastal influence and humid summers favor a Northeast mixture with flowers adapted to seasonal moisture. The mixture contains both native species and non-native flowers adapted to the region, creating varied colors, heights and bloom periods. Sow in a sunny, prepared, weed-free seedbed and keep the surface consistently moist while seedlings establish.

The Sahara Rudbeckia has a beautiful bloom of caramel, red and pink - perfect for a fall bouquet since it will flower into mid to late autumn! It tolerates heat well and thrives in full Sun. Grown as a half-hardy annual, the Sahara performs well in most soil types. This delightful flower not only is an attention grabber for people, but for butterflies as well. Make sure to deadhead faded flowers regularly to encourage more blooms.

Despite its name, the Swamp Asclepias is one of the most vibrant and beautifully colored milkweeds around for the home gardens! This Butterfly Weed's red blooms are beautiful and will attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. This perennial thrives in zones 3-8 and will produces its willowy foliage and cherry-red blooms that can be enjoyed all summer long!

The Marmalade Rudbeckia is a dwarf variety that has large, golden-orange flowers that will bloom from summer to early fall! This flower grows to be two feet tall, and flowers are up to five inches across. It is a versatile plant that can be used in flower beds, borders, cutting gardens and large containers.

Indian Summer Rudbeckia (Rudbeckia hirta), an award-winning variety of Black-Eyed Susan, is cherished for its brilliant, long-lasting blooms and adaptability in the garden. First popularized in the late 20th century, this hardy annual or short-lived perennial produces extra-large daisy-like flowers—often 6–9 inches across—with golden-yellow petals surrounding dark chocolate-brown centers. Plants grow 3–4 feet tall with sturdy, branching stems, making them excellent for borders, pollinator gardens, and cut flower arrangements.

Goldsturm Rudbeckia (Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’) is an award-winning perennial introduced in the mid-20th century and celebrated for its long-lasting, golden-yellow daisy-like blooms with dark brown centers. Native to North America, this variety grows 24–36 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, creating bold displays in borders, meadows, and pollinator gardens. Easy to grow from seed, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating heat, drought, and poor soils once established.

Dwarf Blazing Star (Liatris cylindracea) is a petite, drought-hardy species native to the dry prairies, glades, and rocky outcrops of the central and eastern United States, where its deep taproot allowed it to persist through challenging conditions. Unlike the taller prairie Liatris types, L. cylindracea stays low and compact, often producing short, sturdy flower spikes lined with cylindrical clusters of vivid purple blooms that open from the top down and draw in bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

These are by far our favorite Rudbeckia flower. These provide a prolific amount of flowers that excellent for cut flower use. Once cut, these flowers will stay fresh and look great for weeks! The long narrow petals of the Chim Chiminee Rudbeckia give off beautiful fall shades of bronze, gold, red and burnt orange. This variety is perfect for any garden or vase as it is an outstanding cut flower!

The long-lasting blooms of the Cherry Brandy Rudbeckia brings beautiful, rich shades of crimson to any garden or bouquet! The giant red blooms attract butterflies and bees all summer long, and songbirds in the early fall. The Cherry Brandy thrives in the sun and is able to stand up to heat and humidity, making it easy to care for. It is a perennial, therefore it will reseed itself around the garden, perpetuating from year to year! Make sure to deadhead the faded flowers in order to prolong the flowering season.

The Gayfeather Liatris is an excellent variety at attracting butterflies, bees and hummingbirds and matures to 4' in wet to mesic soil conditions. Like many Liatris species, when it begins to bloom it starts at the top and works its way down. This is an excellent Liatris species to plant in wet-medium prairies and perennial gardens and it makes to be a perfect cut flower.
