One of our most beautiful bulb blends! "Mixture of Pink" is a beautiful and immensely fragrant mixture of solid color hyacinths. Hyacinths are great for mass displays, borders, bowls, containers and cut flowers. Hyacinths bloom for an extended period of time and combine very well with early flowering tulips. Hyacinth bulbs are deer resistant and will perennialize if the foliage is allowed to die down.

Before Planting

Hyacinths perform best where winter and spring drainage is sharp, sunlight is ample, and their heavy flower spikes are sheltered from strong wind. Store bulbs dry and cool until fall, checking the basal plate for mold, softness, or mechanical injury.

Planting

Plant before the ground freezes, arranging bulbs with the nose up and root plate down. Large garden hyacinths are commonly set about 6 inches deep and 5–6 inches apart; use package directions for smaller types. Backfill the loosened bed and water once.

Watering

Roots develop in cool autumn soil. Additional irrigation is needed only when fall or spring is unusually dry, and it should reach the rooting depth. As foliage fades and dormancy begins, reduce water to prevent bulb rot.

Fertilizer

A thin compost layer supports most established plantings. Use bulb fertilizer only when soil testing shows a deficiency, applying it around—not against—emerging shoots. Too much nitrogen can produce floppy leaves and weak flowering.

Harvesting

Cut spikes when the lowest florets open and upper buds remain closed. For garden display, remove faded flower stalks before seeds form but retain every green leaf so the bulb can store energy.

Tips

Let foliage yellow and detach naturally. Hyacinth bloom spikes often become smaller in later years; move or divide crowded bulbs after dormancy if desired. Gloves help prevent skin irritation when handling bulbs.

Pests & Diseases

Hyacinth yellow disease, basal rot, Botrytis, and bulb rots can persist in planting stock. Reject soft bulbs and those with yellow slime, internal browning, or mold. Plant in draining soil, remove infected bulbs with surrounding soil, disinfect tools, and dry lifted bulbs thoroughly before cool, ventilated storage.

Bulb mites, narcissus bulb flies, slugs, squirrels, and basal rots can cause losses. Reject damaged bulbs, improve drainage, remove infected plants promptly, and protect freshly disturbed soil where animals dig.
