Use clean trays, sanitized equipment, and a fresh, fine-textured seed-starting mix or approved hydroponic medium. Choose a clean indoor area with good airflow, reliable light, and easy access to potable water. Pre-soak only large seeds that benefit from it, then drain thoroughly before sowing.

Planting

Sow microgreen seed densely and evenly across the pre-moistened medium, pressing it into good contact without piling seed. Mist or bottom-water so the medium remains uniformly moist but not saturated. Cover or weight only species that benefit from a blackout period, then expose seedlings to strong light and airflow after emergence. Harvest density replaces thinning, so do not thin the stand.

Watering

Keep the medium evenly moist but never saturated. Bottom-water when possible, allowing excess water to drain completely, and reduce moisture as the crop matures to discourage mold and weak stems.

Fertilizer

Fertilizer is usually unnecessary because microgreens are harvested while relying on stored seed nutrients. For longer crops, use only a very dilute complete nutrient solution.

Harvesting

Cut microgreens just above the growing medium after cotyledons fully expand and before or as the first true leaves appear. Use clean scissors, harvest while foliage is dry, and avoid including growing medium.

Tips

Use clean seed and sanitized trays for every crop. Provide strong airflow and light immediately after any blackout period, and avoid sowing so densely that stems remain wet or develop mold.

Pests & Diseases

Damping-off, Pythium root rot, and seedborne molds can ruin microgreens and create food-safety concerns. Use seed intended for sprouting or microgreens, potable water, sanitized trays, and fresh medium. Bottom-water without saturation, provide airflow immediately after blackout, and discard—never trim or rinse—any tray with spreading mold or decay.

Fungus gnats and occasional aphids may affect microgreens. Use sanitized trays, exclude adult insects, maintain proper drainage, and place yellow sticky cards nearby without allowing them to contact the crop.
