The Cherry Belle Radish is the earliest maturing, garden standard radish. This variety is a 1949 All-American Winner and there is no wonder why. This radish retains its fine eating quality all season. The Cherry Belle is a round, smooth, scarlet beauty. This radish is 3/4" inches across with a crisp, white flesh that is ideal for garnishes or use in salads.

Before Planting

Give Radish a full-sun site with deep, loose, well-drained soil. Remove stones, clods, roots, and undecomposed organic matter, then work the bed to a fine texture so radish roots can develop evenly. Avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen, and correct soil fertility only as indicated by a soil test.

Planting

Direct sow radishes in cool soil from early spring, repeating small plantings every 1–2 weeks until warm weather. Sow again in late summer for a fall crop. Maintain consistent moisture during emergence and thin promptly after seedlings develop their first true leaves. Thin round radishes to about 2 inches apart and large daikon types to 4–6 inches.

Watering

Maintain consistent moisture around developing radish roots. Water gently and deeply during dry weather, avoiding both drought stress and sudden heavy irrigation that may split or distort the crop.

Fertilizer

Feed radish sparingly with a balanced fertilizer when soil fertility is low. Too much nitrogen produces lush tops, delayed roots, and inferior shape or flavor.

Harvesting

Pull radishes when roots reach the expected diameter and color but before they become pithy, woody, or overly hot. Check frequently during warm weather, since roots can pass peak quality quickly.

Tips

Prevent competition by keeping radish beds weed-free from emergence onward. Avoid compacting the soil, thin before roots crowd, and sample roots regularly so they do not become oversized.

Pests & Diseases

Downy mildew, black root, clubroot, white rust, and bacterial black rot affect radishes. Use clean seed, rotate brassicas, and avoid moving infested soil. Harvest promptly and discard roots with dark internal discoloration, swollen feeder roots, or soft lesions; remove volunteer radishes between crops.

Radish may attract cabbageworms, loopers, aphids, flea beetles, and slugs. Inspect frequently, use physical barriers early, and choose targeted biological controls instead of broad-spectrum insecticides.
