Before Planting

Prepare a sunny, weed-free bed with loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Incorporate finished compost and use a soil test to correct pH and nutrients; avoid fresh manure and sites where water collects.

Planting

Start shallot seed indoors 8–10 weeks before the last spring frost, or direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. Sow shallowly, keep the mix evenly moist, and provide strong light. Harden indoor seedlings and transplant while conditions are cool; thin direct-sown plants to the listed bulb spacing.

Watering

Keep the root zone evenly moist while leaves and bulbs are developing, supplying about 1 inch of water per week when rainfall is lacking. Reduce irrigation as tops yellow, and stop before harvest so skins can dry.

Fertilizer

Base fertilizer on a soil test. Light nitrogen during early leaf growth can help, but stop feeding once bulbs begin swelling; late nitrogen delays maturity and shortens storage life.

Harvesting

Lift shallots when most tops yellow and fall and the bulbs have developed papery skins. Loosen them with a fork instead of pulling, then cure in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated place until necks and outer skins are fully dry.

Tips

Weed shallowly because shallots compete poorly and their roots are easily disturbed. Do not hill soil over enlarging bulbs. Remove flower stalks if bulb production is the goal, and store only firm, fully cured bulbs.

Pests & Diseases

Downy mildew, Botrytis neck rot, purple blotch, Fusarium basal rot, and white rot affect shallots. Use clean seed, rotate alliums, and keep foliage dry. Remove plants with white basal growth or premature yellowing. Cure harvested bulbs thoroughly and store only firm, uninjured shallots.

Onion thrips, onion maggots, leafminers, cutworms, and allium diseases may occur. Rotate away from onions, garlic, leeks, and shallots; remove cull bulbs and crop debris, and inspect folded leaves for feeding damage.
