Zone 10 - What to Plant in October

The dog days of summer have finally passed in zone 10 and we can start growing some crops in the garden. The typical first frost in Zone 10 is mid-late December but even then it can be very mild. This allows for easy winter growing of several crops. Below is a list of items that can be planted in zone 10 in October.

The Snowball White Onion is our most popular onion set! This variety is always crisp and delicious! The Snowball White's big bulbs have a lovely golden yellow papery skin on the outside with a pale yellow flesh with a mild flavor that is great for cooking.

The Sweet Oversize Onion is just like its name, is oversized and super sweet! Get a head start with these oversized, sweet and delicious onion sets.

The Red Karmen Onion Set is a delicious zesty, ruby red onion! Why take the time to start your onions from seed when you can have an already started onion set? Harvest the Red Karmen onion sets a couple months earlier.

The large, high yielding Stuttgarter Yellow is an excellent tasting onion, raw or cooked! This variety is solid with a glossy, brown skin with a deliciously crisp and yellow flesh. Stuttgarter yellow VERY RESISTANT to running to seed in unfavorable weather.

An early cabbage with a blue-green color. Produces beautiful globe-shaped heads that have a blueish color. Very good holding ability. 3-5 lb. heads produced on low, compact plants. First introduced by Harris Moran.

The Green Salad Bowl is a decorative rosette type of lettuce with closely set crispy leaves. This looseleaf lettuce's crumpled leaves hold water very well, making it a popular variety!

The spicy flavor, attractive purple stems, and green leaves of the Hong Vit Radish makes it a favorite among many growers! This radish variety is also a very fast growing microgreen. Storage #4 is a great producer of dark green color cabbage that have excellent storage life. This versatile variety also works great in the late fall for fresh market, especially in muddy and rainy conditions. Due to its earliness when used for storage, we recommend later season plantings for best storage results.
