Zone 9 - What to Plant in November

The growing season is here for zone 9 gardeners. The hot and humid days of summer are behind us and we can start growing the garden. Now is a great time to start and grow all of the items we have below. Some should be started inside and others should be directly sowed into the garden.

The Merveille Four Seasons is a French Bibb lettuce type that produces rich deep reddish leaves with bright cranberry red tips. This 12-16 inches lettuce has a wonderful butter taste and will hold its flavor in hot weather. The rich red leaves surround a small, 8-12 inches pale green, tight heart. The Texas Early Grano Onion has a nice sweet flavor that is a favorite among home growers! The vidalia-type onion is now available in organic seeds. The white flesh is crisp and not too pungent. Dr. Burbank even admitted he was fortunate to have bred this cultivar. Red Pontiac Easy and adaptable red potato for home gardening. Most likely the easiest and most adaptable red potato there is to grow, not to mention the consistent flavor! Attractive deep red skin and eyes, white flesh. The tuber of choice for new potatoes or fresh eating. Red Pontiac - Comes from Florida in 1945 so it grows well in both the South and North regions. Kennebec Potato Seeds One of the most popular potatoes grown by home gardeners. High yields of large, white skin, white fleshed tubers that grow well under harsh conditions. Kennebecs - Superb boiled, mashed, fried, hashed or baked. Good jacket potato - smoother it in sour cream, cheese, chives and bacon. It's absolutely perfect. If it is late in the season and we are out of a variety above, we will substitute the next closest variety.

Certified - The O'Henry is a unique looking white-skinned and cream-fleshed sweet potato variety with a deliciously delicate sweet flavor. This different looking sweet potato might look more like a potato than sweet potato, but its yummy sweet flavor is all sweet potato! O'Henry cooks drier than other sweet potatoes making it the perfect baking or frying sweet potato.

The Green express is a bright green mini cabbage with excellent flavor! This favorite is now available as organic. The early maturing cabbage has a mild flavor and crisp texture that can't be beat. The Green Express can be sown directly in Fall gardens or transplanted in Spring.

SPRING SHIPPING - Certified - The Pinto Gold is a unique two colored potato! This potato variety has a purple skin with its gold flesh showing a bit on the outside. The Zebra or Pinto Gold is a beautiful gourmet style potato. This unique potato looks great when baked and served whole. The Pinto Gold has a great flavor with a high starchiness. The Pinto Gold is a favorite for fresh markets!

The Green Sprouting Calabrese produces large dark green heads bursting with flavor. This broccoli with is a favorite, that now is available as organic seed! Good in short season areas with cool nights. It will produce many lateral or side shoots over a long season. It is slow bolting with a flavor that can't be beat.

The Jericho Lettuce is known for its great baby leaf production and is very tolerant to hot weather. This lettuce is a blonde romaine that can be grown for both baby leaf and full-size heads. The Snow Crown cauliflower is a delicious, mild and sweet hybrid. This cauliflower's head will get to 7-8 inches across and 1-2 pounds. The Snow Crown is extra early and adaptable and can be harvested in summer or fall. Be careful not to under-fertilize or water, stress can cause a purplish discoloration on the undersides of the head.
