Sunflower Growing Tips
Just like their name, sunflowers adore full sun and warm weather. This plant is a North American native, and was a key food crop for native peoples. Today, they're still grown for food, and not just for birds: their seeds make a wholesome snack and are pressed into vegetable oil. Below is our top 10 tips to growing great sunflowers.

Top 10 Sunflower Growing Tips

1. Give your sunflowers plenty of sun but also remember to give shade occasionally.

2. Water your sunflowers frequently and generously.

3. Make sure to plant after the last frost.

4. Give your sunflowers plenty of space to grow. Do not over crowd them. Each sunflower needs a lot of nutrients from the soil, planting several together will just mean each plant will get less nutrients.

5. Be sure to stake your sunflowers when they need support. Don't let it fight against the elements by itself.

6. Give your sunflowers good compost.

7. Birds love sunflower seeds. When directly sowing into your garden be sure to cover with a screen until the plants have sprouted. You may also grow indoors until the plants are small and then transplant into your garden.

8. To keep them strong year after year continue this kind treatment while the plants are young every year.

9. Be sure to cut off dead leaves, and keep the area weed-free.

10. Do not use any pesticides, grass seed or other chemicals near the growing sunflowers.
