Peaology
One vegetable that is always fun to grow is the pea, (Pisum sativum). Peas are similar to beans, as they have large seeds and are easy to grow. The only main difference between the two is that peas like cooler weather while beans enjoy warmer temperatures. A pea is best described by the type of pods it has. There are 3 main types of peas: the English, or garden pea, the snap pea, and the snow pea.

English Peas: Are cool weather vegetables that grow as annual vines to six feet tall. The English pea has a tough pod with tender peas inside.  A great English pea is 'Green Arrow', a high yielding, 2 foot tall pea plant that matures in 70 days.

Snow Peas:
Is harvested flat (before the pea seeds form) mainly for its tender pea pod. Snow peas are the easiest of the three to grow because you don't need to wait for the pea pods to fill out to harvest them. They're tender, stringless, and best when harvested before pea seed development. An Urban Farmer favorite is 'Dwarf Grey Sugar' a viny, a 2 to 3 foot ball pea plant with 3 inch pods that matures fast in only 57 days.

Snap Peas: The best of both worlds. A pea pod that fills out like an English pea, but has a sweet, tender pod like snow peas. Upon harvesting snap peas, cut off the pea pod cap and take the string out of the pod. A delightful snap pea is 'Sugar Ann' a 2 to 3 foot, medium green pea plant, with 3 inch pods that matures in 52 days.
