Introduction
Radishes

The radish (Raphanus sativus) is one of the fastest and easiest vegetables to grow. Radish tend to grow well in almost any climate. Many varieties can be harvested as soon as three weeks after the seeds are planted. Radishes have numerous varieties, carying in size, color and maturity times.

Before Planting
Radishes can be grown throughout the year because most varieties prefer cool weather. For a continuous crop try planting a successive crop every couple weeks. Radish prefer a more shady location with average to rich soil.

Planting
Radish grow quickly and do not require transplant. Place the radish seed directly where they are to grow, 1/4" deep and about 2" inches apart. The prefer a moist soil throughout the growing period.

Watering
They are water lovers so be sure to keep the soil moist at all times.

Fertilizer
Try giving a fertilizer when sowing and every couple weeks as they love complete liquid fertilizers.

Days to Maturity
Ranges from 21-35 days depending on variety.


Harvesting
Radishes left in the ground too long can become woody and bitter. Be sure to harvest at the correct maturity time for best flavor. Try removing soil from above the radish and pull up on the leaves to harvest the radish.

Storing
Radishes are best if eaten quickly in a salad or used as a garden. If you need to store be sure to keep in the refrigerator and should be used within two weeks of harvest.


Pests & Diseases
Cabbage moth and white butterfly caterpillars are the primary pests that affect radishes. Treatment with Bt will usually remedy the problem. Aphids will sometimes attack, but they are easily discouraged with Soap-Shield.

Tips
Try soaking harvested radishes in ice water for a couple hours before eating to increase crispness and flavor.
